Detailed download instructions

Product: Grammar Expert Plus

This article contains detailed instructions for downloading and installing the retail version of Grammar Expert Plus.

When you purchase Grammar Expert Plus and select "Download" as the shipping method, an e-mail message containing download instructions will be sent to you. You should closely follow the instructions contained in the e-mail message. Information in this article may help if you encounter difficulty.

The e-mail message will contain a download link that looks something like this:

http://www.wintertree-software.com/cgi-bin/dl.pl?key=6d7b8e473d653d83

(The link above is an example only; your link will be different.) This link in the e-mail message is the URL of your private copy of Grammar Expert Plus. Your e-mail program will probably highlight or underline the URL like a regular web link. The first step in downloading is to open the download link by clicking on it in your e-mail program. Your e-mail program should open the download page in your browser. If your e-mail program does not do this, you can paste the URL in your browser by following this procedure:

  1. Select the URL by dragging the mouse over it.

  2. Select the Edit + Copy menu item in your e-mail program (some applications may use a different name for this menu item; the point is to copy the selected text to the clipboard).

  3. Switch to your browser, activate its Address bar by clicking in it, then type Ctrl+V to paste the URL into the Address bar.

  4. Press the Enter key to open the link in your browser.

At this point, the "Download Grammar Expert Plus" page should appear in your browser.

If an error page appears instead, the download link URL line may have been broken by your e-mail program (some e-mail program break long lines in the display). If the download link in the e-mail message looks something like this:

http://www.wintertree-software.com/cgi-bin/dl.pl?key=6d7
b8e473d653d83

then you will need to join the two parts by pasting each part into your browser's Address bar. If you join the two parts correctly, the Address bar will contain something that looks like this:

http://www.wintertree-software.com/cgi-bin/dl.pl?key=6d7b8e473d653d83

The "Download Grammar Expert Plus" page contains another link that looks like this:

http://www.wintertree-software.com/order/dl/12345678/gramxplus.exe

When you click on this link, your browser will display a password dialog. Your user name and password appear in the "Download Grammar Expert Plus" page. Enter the user name and password, then click OK in the password dialog. (You can drag the password dialog over if it obscures the user name or password in the page.) Be sure to enter the user name and password carefully.

After you click the OK button in the password dialog, your browser will begin downloading your copy of Grammar Expert Plus. When your browser asks whether you want to "open" or "save" the file, select "save."

Your browser should then display a "Save as" dialog. The "Save as" dialog lets you select the folder into which your personal copy of the Grammar Expert Plus setup file will be copied. You can use the folder selected by your browser if you like. You must make note of the folder's location, as you will need it in an upcoming step. Click the Save button in the dialog to begin the download process.

Your browser will begin downloading file gramxplus.exe from Wintertree Software's web site to the folder you selected on your computer. Your browser will indicate the progress of the download, and will signal you when the download is complete. In rare cases, the download may fail (because of connection problems). You can try downloading again by clicking the link in the "Download Grammar Expert Plus" page.

Some company networks expressly prohibit downloading executable files (.exe files) as a security measure. If you are unable to download gramxplus.exe after repeated attempts, your network administrator may need to temporarily lift the restriction so you can download it, or you may need to download using a computer not connected to your company's network.

Once downloading has completed successfully, you are ready to install Grammar Expert Plus. First, you will need to open the folder containing gramxplus.exe (remember that you earlier made note of the folder's location). The easiest way to open the folder is via Windows Explorer (note that Windows Explorer is not the same as Internet Explorer). Open Windows Explorer by right-clicking on the Start button, then select Explore. Using Windows Explorer, navigate to the folder into which you downloaded gramxplus.exe. You should see gramxplus.exe in that folder. If not, something went wrong: You at the wrong folder, downloading failed, or downloading hasn't completed yet. Either wait for downloading to complete, or try it again.

Before installing, you must do something very important first: Make a backup of gramxplus.exe. If you have a CD-ROM burner, you can burn gramxplus.exe to a CD-ROM. If you have another method of reliably backing up files, use that method to back up gramxplus.exe. Simply leaving gramxplus.exe on your computer's hard drive is not a reliable backup method. Hard drives fail quite frequently. If you do not have a reliable backup method, you should consider obtaining one, or be prepared to accept the loss of your data and the software products (such as Grammar Expert Plus) you download after purchasing. (Wintertree Software charges a fee for recovery of lost software after 30 days from date of purchase.)

Once your backup is made, you can install Grammar Expert Plus. To begin the installation, double-click gramxplus.exe in Windows Explorer. The Grammar Expert Plus setup program will ask where you want to install the program. The default is c:\Program Files\Grammar Expert Plus. The default is fine for most people. Installation takes just a few seconds. If any error messages are displayed during installation, the setup file may have been corrupted during downloading. Unfortunately, the only solution is to download again, by starting back at the "Download Grammar Expert Plus" page.

After installing, you can run Grammar Expert Plus by double-clicking the Grammar Expert Plus icon on the desktop, or through the Start menu: Start + Programs + Grammar Expert Plus + Grammar Expert Plus.

To view the Grammar Expert Plus user's guide, press the F1 key while the program is running, or select Start + Programs + Grammar Expert Plus + User's Guide.

The last step is to save the e-mail message containing download instructions safely, or at least record your Grammar Expert Plus serial number in a safe place. You will need your serial number to obtain support or purchase future upgrades. Again, simply keeping the e-mail message on your computer's hard drive is not a safe record.

Note: Some versions of the Grammar Expert Plus evaluation software include a "Register" item in the Help menu. Please note that this item is no longer used. Entering your serial number or any other number into the Register dialog box will not work. You need to download and install the retail software as described in this article.
