Version 2.1

The grammar checker used by Grammar Expert Plus has been completely rewritten. The new grammar checker allows matching of far more sophisticated patterns than could be matched by previous versions. Furthermore, the patterns match a much broader range of text, meaning problems can be detected in sentences and phrases of different structures. Many new patterns have been developed to take advantage of the grammar checker's new capabilities. Overall, the grammar-checking capability of Grammar Expert Plus is now far more comprehensive than in previous versions.

The descriptions displayed for each grammar problem have been rewritten to make them more helpful. Where possible, the descriptions explain why the text was in error (or appeared to be in error).

A "Report confidence threshold" setting is now available in the Grammar property page. This setting can be used to filter out grammar problem reports based on their estimated accuracy. Because the English language is so complex and ambiguous, it is not always possible to detect grammar errors with 100% accuracy: sometimes, valid sentences and phrases are reported as errors. The new grammar checker estimates the accuracy or confidence of each problem based on the ambiguity of the words involved (and a few other factors). The "Report confidence threshold" setting lets you decide which problem reports, if any, are filtered out. You can adjust the setting so that Grammar Expert Plus will report more problems, but more of the reports will be inaccurate, or so that Grammar Expert Plus will report only problems which are estimated to have a high degree of accuracy. In addition, the confidence level of each problem is now displayed graphically in the Grammar dialog box to help you decide whether the reported problem is a legitimate error.

The "Style" property page has been removed, and the "Grammar" property page has fewer choices for reporting of problem categories. The problem categories (the "Also detect" section of the "Grammar" property page) are limited to categories related to user preference, such as vague terms or gender-specific terms.

The Statistics dialog box now includes a graphical display showing the relative "simplicity" or "difficulty" of the text, in addition to numerical reports displayed in previous versions. Also, the Statistics dialog shows information for the entire document, not just the checked portion.

When a grammar (not spelling) problem is detected, the "Add" button in the Grammar dialog box adds the problem and words involved in the problem report to a file so that problem will not be reported for those words again.

Both the Grammar Expert Plus user's guide and Grammar Help documents can now be searched for specific words and phrases to make finding information easier.

A problem where the Add button the Grammar dialog box would not add a word reported as a misspelling to the user dictionary has been corrected.

A problem where an empty dialog box (i.e., a dialog box with no text) was displayed when attempting to close Grammar Expert Plus without saving if the document was modified has been corrected. (Empty dialog boxes may have appeared in other circumstances as well, and those have been corrected also.)
