Incorrect replacements in multi-line text areas

Applies to: Spell Check Applet version 1.5 and earlier

Problem: You are using Spell Check Applet with IE for Windows, using Sun's 1.5 JVM. The text area being checked contains multiple lines. A misspelled word appears on any line other than the first. When Spell Check Applet attempts to correct the misspelled word, the replacement is off so the text becomes garbled. This happens only on IE for Windows, using Sun's 1.5 JVM.

Discussion: The problem is due to a bug in Sun's Java library. Details on the bug are available here. Information on Sun's web site indicates the bug has been corrected, but the symptoms are still present using version J2SE 1..5.0 (build 1.5.0_04-b05).

Solution: Upgrade to Spell Check Applet version 2.1. Using Spell Check Applet version 1.5 and earlier, the only solution until the problem is fixed by Sun is to hide Spell Check Applet's context area. This can be done by adding the following <PARAM> tag:

<PARAM NAME="ContextAreaVisible" VALUE="false">

When the context area is hidden, the user will not be able to see misspelled words in context, but replacements will be made correctly.
